Dante is a playable character added in Revelations Chapter Two. He is a two-in-one type character, with Charon being his second part.

Dante

Dante is the character the player spawns as, and is the main character of the two. Dante has ink tears, which leave slowing creep where they land. When beginning to fire, Dante will slam a book on the ground, which knocks back enemies and applies an increase of damage taken to enemies hit by the book (2.5× more damage if Dante is alone, 1.5× damage if he is merged with Charon). If an enemy collides with a wall as a result of the knockback, they sustain damage based on the player's damage-per-second rate. Enemies affected by the debuff will be tinted red and will have a red sigil above them. When used, the book will be on cooldown for two seconds, but will recharge instantly once a debuffed enemy is killed.

Charon

Charon is the secondary character to Dante. Phylactery works uniquely with Charon, as it also serves as a passive item. If Charon keeps facing the same direction, his shot speed will be increased. If he changes direction, hit shot speed will be cut in half. Charon will regain 33% of his shot speed if he keeps facing the same direction for two seconds, and the remaining 66% if he keeps facing the same direction for seven seconds.

Playstyle

When beginning a floor, Dante will spawn alone in the starting room, with Charon placed near the end of the floor. When Phylactery is fully charged (after clearing one room), all doors will be chained shut (excluding special rooms like the Treasure Room, Shop, etc.) Using Phylactery here will swap the player to the other character. The player must traverse through the floor with both Dante and Charon, with the goal being for the two characters to meet up in the same room. When both Charon and Dante enter the same room, their health, items, and trinkets will combine into one character. The player now controls Dante, with Charon now becoming a familiar-like entity next to Dante. Charon fires tears only in the direction he is facing. Phylactery will turn into a zero-charge active item, which is used to swap the direction in which Charon fires by activating it and pressing the firing keys (or movement keys, configurable in the Revelations Options Menu) in the direction the player wants Charon to face.

Notes

  • When joined together, Dante and Charon are able to hold two trinkets and two consumables, but can only hold one when alone.
  • All items are shared when the two have met up, but when separated, their items will be split between them depending on who picked up what item.
    • When picking up any passive item, Phylactery can be activated during the pickup animation to send it to the other character. If performed when the two are together, it will become one of Charon's items.
  • The first time Dante and Charon meet up, a dime will drop.
  • The chains will temporarily disappear when you pick up an active item, allowing you to pass through and continue exploring without switching.
  • Neither character can enter the Boss Room alone.
    • However, if one of the characters teleports into the Boss Room, such as through The Emperor card, the other character will join up with the player immediately.
  • When defeating the second boss of any floor, two item pedestals will spawn instead of one.
  • Playing in Greed Mode as Dante will alternate between him and Charon every two waves. If you reach the boss wave, they will be reunited until the next floor.

Trivia

  • Following the Sin Update, Dante and Charon high five each other whenever they meet.
  • Following the Vanity Update, forced Curse of the Labyrinth was removed as a mechanic of Dante and Charon.
  • Following the Vanity Update, Phylactery was made a pocket active, which was a mechanic added in Repentance.
    • Because of this, Dante no longer starts with Schoolbag; instead, Dante and Charon may each hold their own spacebar items when separated, as well as hold both when combined.
